My Cougar... The Un-Mustang

Long Beach 2011

For the second year in a row, the guys and I headed to Long Beach for the annual Rod Run at the End of the World.  This is a great show that is well-attended by great cars (and people) from all over the Pacific Northwest.  And, perhaps every bit as fun as the cruise-in itself, is the trip to Long Beach in a "wagon train" of classic cars filled with good friends.  This year, we had five cars in our group, including Billy's Camaro, Alex's Dart, Jamie's Chevelle, Steve's Mustang and my Cougar.  While the weather was a bit foggy and chilly on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday the weather was warm.  If you'd like to see some pictures, I actually have two albums for you to check out on the right side of this page.  The album titled "Long Beach 2011" has pictures of us, our cars, and general pictures of the car show.  I also got to noticing all of the great designs of taillights on classic cars at the show, so there is another album with pictures of the back ends and tail lights of cars at the show.  Take a look at this album titled "Nuthin' but the tail lights," and while you do see if you can name the year, make and model of car just based on the look of the tail lights.

Wednesday night at PIR is HOT!

Even though there is a massive cruise-in every Wednesday night at the Portland International Raceway, I never seem to make it there more than once or twice each summer.  I think this is largely due to the fact that traffic makes it very hard to reach this North Portland destination on a weekday evening.  True to form, getting there this hot August evening was slow going due to road construction and heavy traffic.  Camden came along with me in the Cougar, and Billy's Camaro and Alex's Dart came along a little later in the evening after traffic had died down at least a little bit.  Be sure to check out the photo album at the right titled "Wednesday PIR 2011"

North Marion Car Show

 A fun little gathering of an eclectic bunch of classic and collector automobiles at my hometown alma mater.  This car show was organized by a couple of good friends and included excellent food from the grill, a live band, a dunk tank and more.  Be sure to check out the album at the right titled "North Marion Cruise-In 2011" to see pictures from this event. 

Milwaukie 2011

This cruise-in is sponsored by the Milwaukie High School Wrestling Club, and is held every year at the Pietro's Pizza Parlor.  This was a well-attended event and there were lots of cool cars to view.  The whole family also enjoyed perusing the farmer's market, and we picked up a nice flat of fresh Oregon strawberries, and sampled some of the yummy treats from the food carts.  Just down the road is Darkhorse Comics and the comic book store "Things From Another World, so Camden and I, of course, had to go check that out too.  It was a sunny and warm day, which made it a perfect day to look at cars and generally just enjoy being outside.  If you'd like to see some pictures of the cars, be sure to check out the album "Milwaukie 2011" at the right side of the page.

The Wet Look out West - Seaside 2011

Friday was the kind of weather you always hope for on the Oregon Coast.  Sunny and warm.  Saturday, well, someone flipped the weather switch to rainy and cold.  Still, despite the weather and one flat tire on the Dart, we had a great time.  This year's Seaside Muscle & Chrome car show was smaller than usual (probably because of the weather), but a real blast.  Time spent with good friends always is.  So, while the cars sat out in the rain, we found plenty of places and ways to keep dry.  The drive both to the coast and home was fantastic.  Click on the album on the right entitled "Seaside 2011" if you'd like to see some more pictures of this event.

Mercurys and Lincolns and Fords, Oh My!

 Let the 2011 cruising season begin!  Finally a sunny and warm weekend, so Camden and I made a quick decision to get the Cougar out for a spin to the All-Ford cruise-in at the Washington County fairgrounds in Hillsboro.  It was a beautiful day to look at cars, and several other Cougars attended as well.  Hosted by a Mustang Club, the show included a large number of Mustangs, but there were also lots of other unique and rare old cars to see.  We were also surprised to run into cousin Seth at the show, and enjoyed chatting and hanging out with him for awhile.  Hope there are many more sunny days to come this summer!  Be sure to check out the photo album at the right side of the page entitled "Fords, Lincolns & Mercs 6/4/11." 

Long Beach Rod Run is FUN!

This year the guys and I went to Long Beach Washington's Rod Run at the End of the World.  This is a large annual event that has been going on for many years, but the first time I had ever attended.  We found it to be a very well run event, and packed with great cars for our viewing pleasure.  The road trip was great fun, including a stop on the way in Seaside to see the Wheels and Waves vintage car show that was taking place there.  All of our cars performed well on the road trip, and Steve in his FE big block powered 1967 Mustang Fastback even won a trophy!  Congratulations Steve!  As you can see in the picture above, we did have to deal with some fog on Saturday morning, but overall the weather cooperated nicely and we all had a great time.  Be sure to check out my album entitle Long Beach 2010 at the right side of the screen.

Canby Cruise-In 2010

This year the weather was great for the annual Canby Cruise-in.  Attendance was huge, with somewhere around 700 cars, motorcycles, boats and tractors in attendance.  A great day spent with friends, including Alex in his 67 Dart GT, Billy's 68 Camaro, Jamie's 66 Chevelle, and Steve's 67 Mustang Fastback.  Be sure to check out the album entitled "canby 2010" on the right side of the page to see pictures of many of the great cars at the show.

"Ford Fever" at the Woodburn Dragstrip - 8/15/10

Each summer, there is an all-Ford event at the Woodburn dragstrip, hosted by the Ford dealer in Woodburn and by the classic Ford parts supplier, Dearborn Classics.  This year we attended with both the Cougar and the Comet.  Since the Comet is usually the only one in the 1960-63 category, we were hoping to win a trophy by default, but alas another Comet appeared and was deemed more worthy in that category.  I was, however, lucky enough to bring home a trophy in the 67/68 Cougar category, in competition with two 1968 Cougar's that attended the show.  Overall, it was a fun but rather hot day of looking at great old cars and watching drag racing.  Be sure to check out the "Ford Fever" album on the right side of the page to see lots and lots of pictures of the event.

Cruising in the Country with Classic Cougars

On 8/14/10, West Coast Classic Cougars hosted a gathering for Cougar enthusiasts at the nationally (or perhaps I should say internationally!) known headquarters for Cougar parts.  Then, later in the day, we all cruised in formation to the home of another avid Cougar owner for a BBQ dinner and more fun in the sun.  Be sure to check out the "WCCC BBQ" album on the right side of this page to see lots of pictures of this enjoyable event.

Fords and Family - Champoeg 2010

Here it is a week into August, and I finally managed to attend a car show in 2010.  The best part, is that Shelby came along too with the Comet.  This was the annual All-Ford day at Champoeg park.  The day started out with some sprinkles, so I was worried that not many would show up, but the rain dried up fairly quickly and lots of great cars came rolling into the park.  There were several other Cougars besides mine, but Shelby had the only 1960 Comet in attendance.  Be sure to look at the album on the right entitled Champoeg 2010 to see many great pictures of our day at Champoeg. 

A Beautiful Day in March

Warm weather and a blue sky means a great day to get the Cougar out and give it a bath.  Around here, getting an over-60 degree day this early in March, along with sun is a special treat, so I made sure to make the most of it.  If you want to see more pictures, check out the album entitled 3/6/10.

2009 Slide Show

The Dart goes Cruisin'!

Went to a cruise-in at the Canby Thriftway, and by far the highlight of the evening was seeing Al's 67 Dart GT there among the cars.  Yes!  The Dart is officially a cruisin' mobile now!  Also in attendance were Jamie's Chevelle, Billy's Camaro, and my Cougar.  Although it was a small turn-out, there was a nice variety of cars to see.  Check out the photo album at the right titled "Thriftway Cruise-in."

Homecoming Princess

The annual Canby cruise-in is always a special event for my car, because it was originally purchased when new (way back in 1967) from the Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealer in this town.  Today was a great day to share with friends and family.  Billy' with his 68 Camaro was there, along with Jamie in his 66 Chevelle.  Alex and Dave were also in attendance.  My parents came, and it was also nice to see two of my Aunts there as well.  What a fun day.  Be sure to check out the pictures in the photo album titled "Canby 2009" at the right of this page.

Hot August Nights - Reno, 2009

It was at least two or three years ago that I and friends sent in our applications to participate in Reno's annual Hot August Nights.  2009 was finally our year.  In addition to my Cougar, Billy's 68 Camaro and Steve's 67 Mustang Fastback also made the trip as registered show participants.  Unfortunately, Jamie's 66 Chevelle was not an official show participant, but fortunately it was still along for the trip (and even managed to get into a few of the cruises and shows).  The one-day drive down was long (over 500 miles) but well worth it.  The variety of cars was astounding and the entire trip was a blast.  Even the drive back home (again, all in one day) was not too bad, and the cars performed great.  Be sure to check out the Hot August Nights '09 photo album at the right side of this page.

Oregon City Hilltop Cruise-in 7/19/09

A hot (90+?) day, but a great day for a cruise-in at the Oregon City Danielson's Thriftway.  There was a great variety of cars in attendance, and even quite a few Cougars!  Camden came along for the ride today, and then we met up with Karen and Shelby who came later in the day.  While walking around looking at all the cars, our Shelby was given the opportunity to sit in the driver's seat of a real Shelby Cobra replica.  She looked like she belonged there!  What a fun day for the whole family.  Be sure to check out the O.C. Seaside Muscle Beach Cruise-in - June 20, 2009

Family + Friends + Cars = a very fun weekend.  Sure, it would have been nice if it hadn't poured down rain all the way to the beach on Friday, but I think that just made us feel extra lucky when it didn't rain for the car show on Saturday.  (Well, okay, maybe a little sprinkle, but certainly not much on Saturday.)  My friends in attendance included Jamie's 66 Chevelle, Billy's 68 Camaro, and Kerry's 68 LeMans.  And, in addition to our cars, there were lots of great cars to see at this year's Seaside Muscle Beach Cruise-in.  Hey, I even won $100!  (Actually a beach towel that looks like an oversized 100 dollar bill, but I'm not complaining!)  Be sure to check out the large amount of pictures in the album titled "Seaside 2009" on the right side of this page.

Let Cruising Season Begin! (PIR 6/3/09)

Wednesday 6/3/09 was the much anticipated first evening of the every-wednesday cruise-ins at PIR, hosted by Beaches Restaurant.  It was a hot evening for seeing a lot of hot cars (both literally and figuratively speaking).  Many a hot rod came close to overheating as we had to idle for quite some time in line to enter the PIR grounds.  But, the Cougar did great, and it was an impressively massive gathering of awesome cars and motorcycles.  Easily the biggest gathering of cars I have ever seen at PIR or anywhere else for the matter.  How many were there?  I would say somewhere around a 1,000 or maybe even more.  Take a look at my "PIR 6/3/09" album at the right side of this page if you'd like to see some more of this great gathering of classic cars and motorcycles.

Kurt's day in the sun

It was a beautiful sunny day in May, and everyone knows that warm weather brings out the bees... The Superbee that is!  Today was the day that Kurt's project rolled out into the sun and roared to life for the first time.  With several other muscle cars in attendance, and the support of friends who could either turn a wrench where necessary or at least look on for support (i.e. me), the 383 cubic inch power mill under the hood roared to life with minimal glitches.  Check out the photo album to the right if you'd like to see a few shots of this celebration of horsepower (beepower?).

Surf City Video

I was trying out new video editing software, and thought the "credits" at the end would scroll, but it didn't seem to work out that way.  And... I incorrectly titled the video "Muscle Beach" cruise (which takes place in Seaside in June, not Lincoln City).  This video is from the Surf City cruise sponsored by Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City.  That's what I get for trying out new software late at night.

Deja Vu View

Not the centerfold, but...

 

I was extremely surprised, but none-the-less pleased, to see my car in the "Readers' Roundup" section of Mustangs and Fords magazine April 2009 edition.  I had sent it in quite some time back.  Even though it wasn't on the cover or a main feature in the magazine, it was fun to see it gleaming in the pages of a major national publication.  (I scanned in the article, above.  Click on it if you want to make it larger.)

2008 Slide Show

Surf City: Lincoln City, Sept. 19-21, 2008

A great weekend trip with friends to Lincoln City, for the annual Surf City car show at the Chinook Winds casino.  We found a great house to rent near to the show this year, so we were able to make a full weekend cruise out of it, instead of just a trip there and back in one day as we had in the past.  Cars in attendance included Steve's big block "fe" powered '67 Mustang Fastback, Billy's stroker powered '68 Camaro, my trusty '67 Cougar XR7, and something that hasn't been seen on the highways and byways of this Earth in a long, long time.  Yes, even though it is September, it must have been Easter here in Oregon.  No, I'm not talking about bunny rabbits and colored eggs; I'm talking about something dead that has come back to life.  The big surprise and star of our cruise this time, was definitely Jamie's freshly resurrected '66 Chevelle Malibu.  No longer the 6 cylinder powerglide equipped grocery getter that it was back in the early 80's when he bought it, it is now a fully tricked out big block powered, hard shifting, head turning beauty.  Having only been back on the road for a couple of days, this fairly lengthy trip after a complete rebuild proved to be an excellent back-from-the-dead, shake-down, maiden voyage, coming-of-age cruise for the reappearance of this great car.  You've got to check out the "Surf City '08" photo album on the right side of this page!

Gettin' the low-down!

A job I've been meaning to do on the Cougar for quite some time now is to lower the front end a bit.  Like Mustangs, the Cougars were designed to actually ride a little lower in the back than in the front, but I want a more even stance.  Today, I finally got "a round tuit" and replaced the stock springs with a set in which I cut one and one-half coils off a set of stock springs from the parts car.  Overall, the procedure went fairly quick (about 3 hours) and easy.  As you may know, compressing those big coil springs can be tricky and even a little dangerous, which is one of the reasons I have been putting it off.  But, with the help of a handy spring compressing tool made especially for these kind of cars, it really came apart and went back together fairly easily.  Check out the step-by-step photos of the procedure in the "gettin' low" photo album on the right side of this page.

A trip to Sonic!

There's a new old fashioned style drive-in eatery in nearby Wilsonville called Sonic.  Like our good old A&W, this has the menu next to the parking spot with intercom ordering, and people on rollerskates bring your food on trays that can hang from the side windows.  The food was good, the drinks were refreshing, and it was a fun outing in the Cougar with the whole family.  Be sure to check out our Sonic photo album at the right side of this page.

A Cougar Homecoming!

Back in June of 1967, my Cougar was sold to its first owner from Canby Ford (then called Eversole Motors).  On Saturday, 8/23/08, she found her way back to participate in the annual Canby cruise-in.  There were some 500 cars registered for the show, but she was the only Cougar in attendance.  This was a great way to spend my birthday.  Be sure to check out the Canby Cruise in 8/23/08 album on the right side of this webpage.

All-Ford Day at Woodburn Dragstrip 8/17

Fortunately, the weather dropped down below the triple digits; unfortunately, it did sprinkle just a little bit at one point on the day of the all-Ford drags and car show at Woodburn Dragstrip.  This time I drove the Cougar and Shelby drove the Comet to the show.  What a great father/daughter experience.  (I tried real hard not to appear jealous that she won an award for the Comet, but the Cougar got none this year.)  It was great to meet up with some other Cougar owners, and there were A LOT of great cars to look at, in addition to watching the drag racing too.  Be sure to check out the Woodburn Dragstrip 2008 album at the right side of the page.

Weekly Wednesday Wheels (at PIR)

Wednesday, August 6, was the first time this summer that I had made it to the weekly cruise-in at Portland International Raceway.  I had been attending a seminar just north in Vancouver, so it was very convenient to just stop in and take in the cars at PIR on the way home.  It was a nice evening of looking at some great cars, and watching the 1/8 mile drag racing.  Billy, Dave, and Al were able to make it as well.  Be sure to enjoy the photo album to the right.

Planes, Pancakes, and Automobiles!

Like last year, the annual Sandy cruise-in and fly-in was the perfect venue for the three Fobert boys (Grandpa, Rod, and Camden) to go see some cars, some planes, and eat a yummy pancake breakfast in a large airplane hangar.  There were lots and lots of cars to see, and this year Billy participated with his 68 Camaro, and brought Dave and Alex along as well.  The weather was nice most of the time, except for one brief shower that sent people scrambling to roll up their windows.  Be sure to check out the 51st Sandy Cruise-in Fly-in photo album at the right side of the page to see more pictures of this event.

A Sunday Gathering of Cougar Brethren

Since it is Sunday, and getting together with other classic car enthusiasts is a spiritually uplifting experience, it seems okay to go with a religiously suggestive extended metaphor for this blog entry.  Today, our house of internal combustion worship took place at the A&W drive-in.  We broke the bread - er, um cheeseburgers - and drank the wine - um, well, rootbeer floats - and celebrated god's (hey, Mercury was a Roman god) eternal power.  Cougars in the congregation on this day included two 67's (including mine) and a 1969 convertible.  While many of us had been to this sacred hallowed ground individually in the past, this was our first group pilgrimage to this great sanctuary of gastronomic repose, attended by rollerskate-clad missionaries carrying window-tray offerings. 

It was good to have the opportunity to put a name to the face, so to speak, after having spent so much time now "talking" to each other on the internet mercurycougar.net forum where we trade ideas, technical advice, and stories of our cars.  It was hot - probably over 90, I would guess - but very cool to be able to get together with these guys and talk and check out each others cars.

High School car show 6/1/08

Entering her first car show, Shelby and the Comet participated in the annual high school only car show at Antique Powerland in Salem.  The clouds looked ominously dark all day, but there was zero precipitation for the duration of the event.  Shelby was quite lucky, coming home with a tool bag, a large set of tools, a tshirt from the event, and a small first aid kit.  The Comet didn't win any awards, but we still had a great father-daughter day.

Get Your Rear In Gear!

An unseasonably nice day got me motivated to pull apart the differential and rebuild the traction lock assembly.  I got it all apart today, but reassembly will have to wait for another day.

Follow-up Note:  Well, like a lot of relatively "simple" projects when working on an old car, this turned out to be more of a job than I had expected.  First, once I got it apart, I found out that instead of a "traction-lock" mine was an "equa-lock."  So, I had purchased the wrong rebuild kit, and had to search for the right one.  Once the correct parts arrived, my friend Dave was kind enough to lend his skills and expertise in rebuilding the entire assembly.  I got it all bolted back in, and everything works great.  Thanks Dave!

Surf City Cruise, Lincoln City 9/22/07

A fun trek to Lincoln City today in the Cougar, along with Steve's 67 Mustang Fastback, and Billy's 68 Camaro.  Jamie, Alex, and Dave were present for the excursion as well.  Highlights of the day include beautiful weather, Alex made over $100 playing roulette, Galluci's Pizza, and lots and lots of excellent cars.  We felt a little bad for Manny of Baywatch, who was on hand to sign autographs... Trouble is, nobody seemed to know for sure who the heck Manny from Baywatch is, so he looked kind of lonely sitting at his autograph table all alone.  Famous hot rod building Boyd Coddington was also a popular attraction for autograph seekers. Live music on the outdoor stage included an appearance by legendary 60's band, The Kingsmen (Louie, Louie).  As seems to often times be the case, I was the lone Cougar representative at the show.  Be sure to check out the photo album on the right of this fun event.

Impromptu Photoshoot

I drove the Cougar to work today, had my digital camera with me, and the soccer field looked like a darn good place to take some pictures.  So, I drove her up onto the grass and started snapping some shots.  Check out the photoshoot picture album to the right if you'd like to see some more shots.

Another PIR Wednesday evening

Attended another massive cruise-in at PIR this evening.  There had to be way over 600 cars there, and hundreds of motorcycles too.  Steve drove his 67 Mustang, and Billy brought his 68 Camaro.  I saw a couple of Cougars I hadn't seen in the area before - a "grabber" blue 67 XR-7 and a 69 convertible.  My daughter, Shelby, came along with me, so we took lots of pictures of her standing by the car that was named after her (ha, ha).  Enjoy the photo album of this event (I can't believe I actually forgot to get pictures of Steve's and Billy's cars tonight - grrr!) on the right side of the page.

The Queen of the Prom, the Belle of the Ball

Okay, so maybe the title above is a bit of an exaggeration, but I'll be darned if the old girl didn't win a trophy (actually a plaque) for best 67-68 Cougar at the All-Ford show at the Woodburn Dragstrip today.  The day started off a little "iffy" with some sprinkles on the way to the show, but then the rain held off for the remainder of the day.  It was a very fun day hanging out with friends, watching drag racing, and looking at some very cool cars.  My friend Steve also won his category, with his 1972 Torino.  Be sure to check out the photo album of this day's event, at the right of this page.

24th Annual Milwaukie Cruise-in 8/4/2007

It was a good day for a cruise-in.  This was the second consecutive year I took the Cougar to the annual Milwaukie Cruise-in, sponsored by Milwaukie Bowl and Mike's Drive-in.  There were lots of nice cars to see, but I was the only Cougar in the show.  Enjoy the photo album of this event on the right side of the page.

New shoes for my girl!

Went to the Wednesday night cruise-in at PIR today, and my Cougar is sporting new wheels and tires.  Well, not new exactly, but new to me.  Looked like somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 or so great cars there tonight.

50th Annual Fly-in/Cruise-in, Sandy, Oregon

One of the neat things about this hobby, is sharing it with family and friends.  Today I got to do both.  Together with my dad and my son, we took the Cougar to the annual cruise-in and fly-in at a small private airstrip near Sandy, Oregon.  Our neighbors were there with their beautiful jeep, and I was also glad to finally meet another local 67 Cougar owner.  The local chapter of the Kiwanis served up a great pancake breakfast, as they have been doing now for 50 years for this event.  Some 600+ cars were in the car show at this fantastic scenic setting.  And, even though there were a few sprinkles, we still had a great time looking at cars and planes.  Be sure to check out the photo album at the right.

Muscle Beach 2007

For the second year in a row, I took the Cougar to the annual "Muscle Beach Cruise" in Seaside, Oregon.  The weather didn't cooperate quite like we would have liked, but we still had a great time.  Like last year, Billy brought his Camaro, and his brother Dave, and Jamie and Alex came too.  Good friends and cool cars - hey, it was a great weekend!  Be sure to take a look at the "Muscle Beach 2007" photo album on the right side of the page to see some pictures of the weekend event.

"Custom" Upholstery on a budget.

It's a woman thing, isn't it?  They always want new clothes.  Well, my girl was in desparate need of new clothes.  The 40+ year old duds were in really bad shape.  My dilemma was to figure out how to dress her like the supermodel that she is, but stay within a budget.  First, I found that Mustang upholstery is A LOT cheaper than Cougar upholstery.  But I couldn't bear to have my girl looking just like every other 67 mustang out there.  Then, I started getting a case of the "What ifs".  What if I took that upholstery, and some digital pictures of the Cougars that are etched into the back window, and went to an embroidery shop?  Could they "customize" my otherwise "standard issue" upholstery, and make it look like a one-off designer outfit?  As it turned out, the answer is a resounding "YES!"  Once I got the upholstery back from the embroidery shop, it was time to spring for pizza and beer for my buddies to help get the old seats (from the parts car) stripped and reupholstered.  I must say, I am extremely happy with the results.  Photos don't really do it justice, but there is a whole album devoted to the re-upholstery project on the right side of the page, so be sure to check it out.  As for my Cougar, the first thing she asked after I got the seats installed was, "Does this new upholstery make me look fat?"  I say they just make her look phat!  Happy cruising everyone!

Getting Ready for Summer

Getting ready for cruising season, so this weekend I fixed my drooping headlight doors. Now all parts of the front grill line up quite nicely. Nothing much else new to report, but I am hoping to get my new seat upholstery installed very soon (this week?). Here's a preview of what's to come!

1960 Comet

Just got this 1960 Comet.  It is in extremely excellent original condition (for a 47 year old car), and my darling Shelby has already started calling it "HER" car!

Okay, this doesn't really have anything to do with my Cougar, but today when we were on a little family outing/drive in the country, we spotted the Batmobile!.  We just had to stop and get some pictures of this replica of the old TV series car.  The owner came out and let us climb inside, Camden playing the part of Robin, and I got to be Batman behind the wheel.  Look out Joker, Riddler, Penguin and Catwoman!  Check out the batmobile photo album on the right!

She's so spoiled! Canby Cruise-in

I'd always wanted a front spoiler on my Cougar, but didn't like the ones available made specifically for the 67 Cougar.  What I do like is the look of the front spoiler on a 1967-69 Camaro.  Too bad they don't make one like that for a Cougar, I lamented.  Then, I got to thinking, what if...  Yep, you guessed it, the Camaro front spoiler fits quite nicely, in my opinion.  Today, the annual Canby Cruise-in was my first opportunity to take the car out with its new spoiler.  It was a fun time, and there was one other Cougar there - also a 67.  Billy brought his 68 Camaro, sporting new wheels and tires since the Seaside Muscle Beach Cruise-in.  Check out the Canby Cruise-in photo album on the right side of this page for more pictures.
